The Love Letter* by Johannes Vermeer
This master copy reveals the intimacy of a Dutch scene in oil painting
Belonging to the great tradition of seventeenth-century Dutch genre painting, this tightened vertical framing accentuates the effect of voyeurism and domestic intimacy. Entitled “The Love Letter”, this remarkable creation signed by Jan Vermeer immortalizes the exchange of a gallant message inside a bourgeois home. The author uses architectural structure to isolate characters in a setting of clarity.
The viewer’s gaze passes the dark door frame to discover a young mistress seated in a yellow gown edged with fine fur, interrupted in her musical practice. The maid in a white cap stands behind her, handing her the long-awaited letter with an air of affectionate assurance. The room is paved with geometric checkerboard marble in black and white reflecting light coming from the left. At the bottom of the doorway in the foreground half-light, a dark-handled broom rests against the partition beside slippers. Two framed canvases decorate the back wall.
Jan Vermeer demonstrates a prodigious talent in the art of trompe-l’œil and controlling incident light effects. His command of oil painting allows rendering slab polish and fabric shimmer with great subtlety.
