The Marriage of the Virgin by Jean Fouquet

This sumptuous, high-style votive illumination stands as a peak of fifteenth-century pictorial art. Entitled “The Marriage of the Virgin”, this admirable work is attributed to the famous Jean Fouquet, official court painter, who here immortalizes a sacred episode under the patronage of his famous patron. Through this holy alliance, the genius illuminator harmoniously unites intimate devotion with the majesty of a theatrical Renaissance architecture.

In the center, under a monumental classical-style portico adorned with twisted gold and carved columns, a high priest in a gold robe and white mitre unites the Virgin Mary and Joseph. Mary is dressed in a long midnight blue cloak draped with sovereign elegance, while Joseph, draped in a green mantle, holds a flowering branch. On each side, a group of witnesses and guards in ceremonial dress watch the scene. On the right, a man in a brown doublet angrily breaks his sterile branch. In the background, a grey-green stone arch opens onto a golden temple. The patron’s engraved inscription majestically surmounts the building.
