“The Mirror” is a work from Fernand Léger’s Purist period. The composition is vertically divided in two, like a mirror. On the left, a black silhouette, evoking a woman’s torso and arm, stands out against a white background and a green post. On the right, a large orange vase is presented against a yellow and gray background. The entire scene is framed in black, white, and orange. Léger contrasts the organic form (the woman) with the mechanical form (the vase), treating them with equal importance, as “type-objects” in an orderly, geometric space.
