In this 1909 painting, Signac depicts the monumental Papal Palace in Avignon bathed in the light of a setting sun. The fortress walls are tinted with orange and pink, reflecting in the blue and purple waters of the Rhône. The Pont Saint-Bénézet (Bridge of Avignon) is visible on the left. It is a fairy-tale vision of medieval architecture transfigured by color.
