The Parade - Jockeys before the Grandstand (Degas)

This work, also known as “Racehorses Before the Stands” and housed at the Musée d’Orsay, captures the moment of the parade before the race. Several jockeys on their mounts pass in front of the crowded grandstands. Degas uses a bold composition with long shadows cast on the track, which create dynamic diagonal lines. The viewpoint is slightly off-center. The artist conveys the atmosphere of excitement and anticipation of the racecourse, one of his favorite subjects for exploring movement and light.
