The Poplar by Gustave Courbet

In “The Poplar”, Gustave Courbet creates a dramatic and asymmetrical confrontation between the terrestrial element and the oceanic immensity. On the left of the composition stands the massive and dark trunk of an isolated poplar, whose leaves resist the violent winds. This tree, firmly planted on an inhospitable rocky coast, serves as a vertical landmark against the horizontal lines of a rough, foaming sea that fills the rest of the canvas. The waves, in deep shades of midnight blue and green, crash with a roar against the stone, throwing up generous sprays of white foam painted with great texture. The stormy sky weighs on the scene, crossed by gray clouds and a few gleams of clearing in the distance. Courbet illustrates here the resilience of continental nature in the face of the eternal aggressiveness and tumult of the sea waves.
