“The Red Studio” (1911) is perhaps Matisse’s most famous work on the theme of the interior. The entire room is submerged in an intense Venetian red (rust color), which absorbs the walls and floor into a single plane. Only the outlines of the furniture are traced in pale yellow, like ghosts. The artist’s works, reproduced in miniature, float in this saturated space, the only touches of varied color. It is a radical statement on the primacy of color.
