The Scream of Homer after Edvard Munch

A hilarious cotton canvas integrating a terrified character into an oppressive atmosphere

This powerful oil painting is an adaptation both anxious and hilarious of one of the most famous works of the Scandinavian Expressionist movement. By revisiting Edvard Munch’s iconic canvas depicting human existential distress, the artist delivers a hilarious modern version titled “The Scream of Homer”. The work brilliantly integrates the cartoon’s characteristic features into the oppressive atmosphere and saturated colors of the original masterpiece.

The main difference lies in the replacement of Munch’s spectral character with a terrified Homer Simpson. In the foreground, the father, with yellow skin and his mouth wide open in an expression of absolute panic, holds his head between his two white, four-fingered hands. Behind him, on the wooden railing of a bridge in perspective, we distinguish the dark and familiar silhouettes of Marge Simpson, recognizable by her tall hair, and her daughter Lisa. The swirling sky, painted with horizontal bands of blood-red and bright orange, as well as the dark sea with blue and yellow undulating curves, visually accentuate the protagonist’s absurd state of panic.

The painter demonstrates an excellent technical mastery by reproducing the highly vigorous brushstrokes and swirling, undulating lines characteristic of the Expressionist movement. The seamless integration of a flat cartoon character within this thick and tormented pictorial texture constitutes a true artistic and humorous feat.
