Painted around 1904, this view of the Seine at Le Pecq shows Derain on the verge of Fauvism. While the composition remains classical, with its perspective along the riverbank, the colors are already heightened. The black tree trunks contrast with the pinkish path and the bright red touches in the vegetation. It is a transitional work, where one feels the artist’s impatience to unleash color to convey the modernity of the suburban landscape.
