“The Smokers” is a seminal work of Fernand Léger’s Analytical Cubism. The canvas depicts a complex scene, a village landscape with figures, but everything is deconstructed into a myriad of geometric facets. The most distinctive element is the smoke, treated as large white globular forms that rise and structure the composition. Figures and houses are barely discernible. The color palette is typically Cubist, restricted to grays, beiges, muted greens, and browns, with a touch of red. It is a study of volume, rhythm, and smoke as a form.
