The Table by André Derain

This still life of great formal sobriety is part of the artist’s period of plastic rigor and return to classicism. In this stripped-down composition entitled “The Table”, the painter Derain André explores the geometric relationships and volumes of everyday objects arranged on a table. This work bears witness to a deep dialogue with the lesson of Cézanne and a search for eternity and stability through pure forms and colors of great restraint.

On a dark brown wooden table, several objects of white earthenware tableware are meticulously arranged. On the left, an elegant white vase or bottle with a narrow neck stands next to two bowls of different shapes, while a ceramic pitcher or jug of a deep blue rises in the background. On the right of the table, a draped white tablecloth or cloth falls in a philosophical and sculptural manner, its rigid folds intensely catching the light coming from the left. The dark background is animated by a rectangular opening of bright blue evoking a window, while a heavy red-ochre or burnt sienna curtain frames the scene on the right.

The artist demonstrates here his exceptional craftsmanship through a neat pictorial technique and a rigorous mastery of light in oil. His ability to render the physical presence of objects and the materiality of fabric through subtle value contrasts attests to a high classical mastery.
