“The Tree in the Scale” is a work from Fernand Léger’s American period, where he explores biomorphic forms. The composition is a dynamic entanglement of a large, sinuous green plant form (the tree) and geometric structures (the yellow and red ladder). Thick black lines and circular shapes (the “scales”) create rhythm. The palette is bright—blue, red, yellow—against a neutral gray background. It is a dialogue between the organic growth of nature and the rigid structure created by man.
