The Two Foscari by Eugène Delacroix

This historical and dramatic scene evokes the implacable rigor of the old ecclesiastical or princely courts of the late medieval period. Entitled “The Two Foscari”, this narrative painting by Eugène Delacroix depicts a moment of intense moral and physical tension within a large, dark courtroom. On the left of the room, the high religious dignitary dressed in a golden robe and a papal mitre sits solemnly on his large elevated throne under a flamboyant red velvet canopy. In the right half of the hall, a pale and semi-nude young man, visibly very weakened by his painful ordeal, is supported by soldiers in arms and deeply weeping relatives. Around them, many clerics and courtiers dressed in red and black robes observe the dramatic scene with gravity or draft official documents. The decor of this vast Gothic nave is austere, illuminated by high windows letting the light filter through.

The artist’s virtuosity shines through in the dramatic theatricality of the staging and the complex management of this large number of characters. His pictorial technique excels at translating intense emotions on the faces, creating a historical drama of quite striking expressive power.
