The Typographer by Fernand Léger*

This horizontal creation by Fernand Léger, entitled “The Typographer”, wonderfully illustrates the theory of contrasts of forms dear to the artist. In this condensed industrial landscape, the artist assembles orthogonal lines and dynamic curves to express the spirit of the contemporary city. This innovative plastic language bears witness to his fascination with the aesthetics of the machine and labor. The scene unfolds horizontally and features a dense, complex superposition of geometric patterns and colorful manufactured elements. In its central area, a large chromatic half-disc displays black, orange, yellow and purple facets that visually animate the entire composition. On the left side, a wide vertical purple stripe is stamped with stylized white characters evoking industrial factory lettering. Several grayish metal pipes, bright scarlet cylinders and black segments intersect in front of ochre and white background planes. The uniform light sculpts each tubular volume with an incredible metallic clarity. The whole composition offers a highly rigorous harmony of mechanical shapes and pure colors.
