The Waterfall (Rousseau)

In “The Waterfall,” Henri Rousseau once again transports us to his dreamlike and lush jungle. The painting depicts a peaceful scene where nature is omnipresent. A small waterfall flows over rocks on the left, bringing an element of freshness and movement. In the center, two golden-coated deer seem to graze quietly, while a figure stands nearby, like a silent guardian of this paradise. The vegetation is, as always with Rousseau, extraordinarily rich and stylized: a large tree with broad leaves dominates the foreground, complemented by brightly colored plants (red, pink) and dense thickets. The clear, uniform blue sky contrasts with the complexity of the plant bed. This work is not the representation of a real place, but a poetic construction, an imaginary Eden where man, animal, and nature coexist in perfect harmony.
