The Weir at the Mill by Gustave Courbet

In “The Weir at the Mill”, Gustave Courbet invites us to a bucolic stroll by the water, in a nature that is both domesticated and wild. In the center of the composition, the river spreads out and crosses a weir in a small bubbling waterfall, the white foam contrasting with the dark waves. The water then flows peacefully towards the foreground, reflecting the cloudy sky. On the left bank, the modest buildings of a mill blend harmoniously into the landscape, testifying to human activity in symbiosis with its environment. On the right, an imposing rock face covered with bushy vegetation rises majestically, strongly closing the perspective. The trees with generous foliage, declined in a rich palette of greens and browns, frame the scene under a soft, diffuse light. Courbet demonstrates once again his ability to magnify ordinary rural scenes through painting rich in texture and emotion.
