The White Tablecloth by Juan Gris

This splendid cubist composition, created by the great master Juan Gris, bears witness to a formal research of great rigor. In this work entitled “The White Tablecloth”, the artist appropriates everyday objects to reorganize them within a network of complex geometric lines. This work is part of the evolution of the cubist movement where volumes unfold in superimposed planes. It wonderfully illustrates the fusion of aesthetics and geometric structure.

The still life is organized around a geometrically folded white packet, which occupies the foreground with a brilliant whiteness. Behind it stands a dark glass bottle whose neck is encircled by a sinuous iron wire. To its left, an ochre terracotta pot is delicately decorated with a leaf motif in relief. A transparent glass, carved into grey and green planes, completes this arrangement placed on a dark brown wooden table. The background is formed by brown and black panels that soberly close the space of the scene. The light, soft but directional, highlights the sharp edges of the various objects.

The exceptional craftsmanship of Gris is reflected in the rendering of materials such as terracotta, glass, and paper.
