The Windows on the City (Delaunay)

This panoramic format work is a masterpiece of Robert Delaunay’s “Windows” series. It represents the culmination of his research on the fragmentation of light and color. The composition is a long, abstract strip, a mosaic of geometric shapes and transparent colored planes. In it, Delaunay captures the multiple sensations of an urban view: reflections in window panes, the movement of the street, the variations of light. Fragments of reality, such as the Eiffel Tower or a Ferris wheel, appear and disappear in this flow of colors. The painting has no center and reads like a sequence of musical notes. It is a radical work for its time, pushing the boundaries of painting and heralding lyrical abstraction.
