Venus and Mars by Sandro Botticelli

This absolute masterpiece of secular painting, bearing the title “Venus and Mars”, is a major allegorical composition executed on wood by the great painter Botticelli Sandro. Produced to celebrate a marriage of the high Florentine aristocracy of the Renaissance, this work illustrates the pacifying triumph of love over warlike violence. The artist marries classical mythology with an exquisite sense of decoration and court poetry.

In a clearing at the edge of a dark myrtle wood opening onto a distant plain, two Greek deities lie facing each other on a verdant lawn. On the left, the goddess of love, awake and serene, is dressed in a sumptuous pleated white robe with golden edgings of great delicacy. Her calm and pensive gaze is directed toward the god of war, lying naked on the right, covered only by a white cloth and falling into a deep sleep. Four playful little satyrs with goat horns and legs play with the attributes of the sleeping warrior. One of them wears his heavy gilded steel helmet, two others carry his large wooden spear, while a last one blows into a conch shell at the god’s ear. A diaphanous light illuminates the clear skin tones of the figures.

The Florentine creator showcases his entire genius in the fluidity of the contour lines and the delicate modeling of the reclining bodies. His exceptional mastery of tempera translates into an extraordinary refinement in the details of the steel armor and the velvet of the draperies, confirming his craftsmanship as an exceptional artisan.
