View of Cairo by Jean-Léon Gérôme

This luminous work is brilliantly part of the Orientalist movement of nineteenth-century French academicism. In the street, a man dressed in a dark suit and a turban walks towards the viewer, while a crowd of figures in traditional drapery is gathered in the distance near the buildings. The golden light of the setting sun strikes the facades and creates sharp contrasts.

The artist’s virtuosity shines in the geometric precision of the perspective and the treatment of the warm light. His exceptional mastery of oil painting makes it possible to restore the rough texture of the stone and the dryness of the air.
