View of Cairo by Jean-Léon Gérôme

Yellow and white clothes dry on a line in the sun. Beyond, a multitude of flat roofs and brick dwellings stretch as far as the eye can see under a pure blue sky. The overhead light bathes the city in a golden, uniform clarity.

The painter’s technical virtuosity is expressed in the perfect rendering of the aerial perspective and the warm light. His absolute mastery of oil painting makes it possible to realistically restore the texture of limestone and atmospheric dust. This admirable work testifies to an exceptional sense of space and urban landscape.
