French Romantic drama takes on an unprecedented humorous dimension in “We’ve been framed by Jerico”, a masterful parody of the historical canvas originally painted by Theodore Gericault. This bold adaptation replaces the desperate shipwrecked victims with the famous recurring pirates from the Asterix comic book series created by Rene Goscinny and Albert Uderzo. The work preserves the dynamic pyramidal composition and the twilight atmosphere of the original canvas while injecting a unique spirit of mockery.

The fundamental difference lies in the mood of the characters facing the imminent wreck of their makeshift raft. In contrast to the agony and morbid despair of the original masterpiece, the pirates display expressions of comical resignation and theatrical anger. Redbeard stands atop the barrel, while Pegleg recites a Latin maxim and Baba the lookout scans the horizon with disappointment. The athletic, suffering bodies of the Romantic painting are replaced by the caricatured, stocky silhouettes of the cartoon buccaneers.
