What a Deal by Gil Elvgren

This bold master copy cleverly plays on the double meaning to sublimate the charm of the femme fatale

By diving into the heart of the playful and seductive universe of commercial art of the time, one discovers a particularly bold scene. The famous illustrator Gil Elvgren has fun here with the codes of gambling and chance to sublimate the charm of the femme fatale specific to pin-ups. The composition designated by “What a Deal” cleverly plays on double meaning and suggestion. The observer becomes an accomplice in an intimate and warm card game.

Sitting in profile on a large bright yellow tufted cushion, an undressed young woman casts a coaxing look over her shoulder. She holds a fan of playing cards in her right hand, while her other hand carelessly holds back a sheer black stocking and a garter belt sliding towards the floor. Her feet are shod in elegant purple pumps. The background of the image is a vibrant orange solid color, against which immense cards suspended in the air stand out, notably aces and clubs. In the foreground, an imposing Jack of Hearts catches the eye, reinforcing the casino theme in a graphic and colorful staging.

This painting highlights the excellence of the handling of oil painting, offering a velvety and particularly realistic rendering of the model’s flesh tones. The juxtaposition of the flat elements in the background with the three-dimensionality of the body demonstrates absolute technical mastery. The attention to detail truly sublimates this unique creation.
