Whoever you are here is your master by Jean-Léon Gérôme

A symbolic master copy illustrating the triumph of love over wild instincts

This original and symbolic composition is part of the nineteenth-century French academic movement. The famous artist Gérôme Jean-Léon combines here elements of classical allegory and wild nature in his work entitled “Whoever you are here is your master”. This unusual creation illustrates the power of divine love capable of taming the most ferocious instincts of predators. The artist stages this philosophical idea with surprising dramatic power and a very theatrical sense of staging.

In a dark interior with a floor of wide wooden planks, the young Cupid, a completely naked small winged child, stands on the left. Crowned with a divine glow on his head, he holds a light whip in one hand to guide the beasts. Before him, a gathering of wild felines huddles in the shadows of the room. A majestic tiger lies on its back in the foreground, exposing its striped belly. Several lions and lionesses with calm gazes sit or lie on the right, watching the young visitor with submission. Two black-spotted leopards complete this group of now_peaceful wild animals.

The artist’s exceptional mastery is expressed in the perfect rendering of the felines’ fur and the child’s anatomy. His oil painting technique makes it possible to contrast the softness of Cupid’s skin with the raw texture of the felines’ coats. This masterpiece testifies to an immense academic craftsmanship.
