Young Ladies of the Village by Gustave Courbet

This landscape and human painting testifies to a renewed interest in provincial scenes of his native Franche-Comté. At their feet, a small black and white spaniel dog stands attentive on the thick grass. A little further to the right, two reddish cows graze quietly in front of a background dominated by imposing rocky cliffs and a green hill under a blue sky dotted with light white clouds. The daylight beautifully illuminates the rich fabrics of the dresses and the texture of the cliffs.

The artist beautifully orchestrates the contrast between the delicacy of the feminine fabrics and the mineral harshness of the natural setting. His personal technique of applying oil, combining fine glazes and strong brushstrokes, testifies to a highly remarkable and mature mastery of the pictorial space.
